The diamondback terrapin is the only turtle specialized for brackish coastal habitats, living in the salt marshes and estuaries along the Atlantic and Gulf coasts of the United States. Females reach 15-23 cm and are much larger than males, and they typically live 25-40 years, rewarding dedicated keepers willing to meet their specialized needs. Terrapins are the most demanding species here: many keepers maintain slightly brackish water to support long-term skin and shell health, and they require excellent filtration and pristine, well-maintained conditions. Provide a large aquatic tank of 300+ liters with a basking area at 31-33°C and UVB. They are strong swimmers and primarily carnivorous, having evolved to crush shellfish, so feed snails, clams, shrimp, crayfish, fish, and pellets, offering hard-shelled prey to keep their powerful jaws in condition.
