Developed in Australia from Burmese, Abyssinian and domestic shorthair lines, the Australian Mist was purpose-bred to be a tolerant, home-loving companion. It is gentle with children, unfazed by handling and content to live entirely indoors, which also protects native wildlife. These cats are playful in a relaxed way — happy to chase a toy or join a game, then curl up on the nearest lap. Their laid-back, sociable nature makes them ideal for families, older owners and multi-pet homes, and they rarely demand the high-octane enrichment that Oriental breeds do. The short, misted coat is genuinely wash-and-go, needing only an occasional brush. The main risk is weight gain, so measure meals and keep them active; otherwise routine dental care and annual kidney and general checks are usually all that a long-lived Australian Mist requires.
