Carpet pythons range across Australia and New Guinea, occupying forests, woodlands, and suburban rooflines where they climb expertly in search of birds and mammals. Size varies by subspecies, but most reach 1.8 to 2.5 meters and 2 to 6 kilograms, living 15 to 25 years. Hatchlings are often defensive and nippy but typically calm into confident, tractable adults. Provide a large, secure enclosure of at least 190 liters with sturdy climbing branches and elevated perches. Maintain a warm basking spot around 31-33C, a cool end in the mid 20s, and humidity of 50-60%. Feed frozen-thawed rodents every seven to fourteen days, sizing prey to the snake's girth. Their strong feeding response calls for tong feeding, but with regular, confident handling most carpet pythons become calm and engaging display animals.
