Its coloration varies by region from purple-blue with orange to nearly all orange, and it is prized as one of the toughest, most forgiving dwarf angelfish for reef beginners. House in a 150-litre (40-gallon) or larger tank with abundant live rock for grazing and shelter, at 24-26C, salinity 1.024-1.026, pH 8.1-8.4. Offer a varied diet rich in marine algae and spirulina plus mysis and angelfish preparations. It is usually reef-safe but, like all dwarf angels, may occasionally nip large-polyp corals or clam mantles, so watch new additions. Keep one per tank and add it early to reduce territorial behavior.
