A network of fine dark spots and squiggles over pale silver, like a fingerprint that never repeats. Most fish sold under this name are actually its lookalike cousin, which is worth knowing and not worth worrying about.

๐ Care guide
The true Julii Corydoras (Corydoras julii) comes from a limited area of coastal north-eastern Brazil and reaches about 5 to 6 cm, carrying a pattern of small distinct dark spots on the head and a broken line along the flank. The great majority of fish sold as julii in shops are Corydoras trilineatus, the three-line cory, whose head markings run together into squiggles rather than staying as separate spots. The two are similar in size, care and temperament, so the mislabelling is a naming issue rather than a husbandry problem. Keep six or more in 80 litres or more at 22-26C, pH 6.0 to 7.5, over sand, with wood and planted cover. Feed sinking wafers, frozen bloodworm, daphnia and brine shrimp, given at lights-out if faster mid-water fish are stealing the food. Both species are peaceful, active in a group and long-lived when their barbels are protected by soft substrate. If the exact species matters to you, look at the head: separate round spots mean julii, joined lines mean trilineatus.
