๐Ÿ“– Care guide

The Featherfin Squeaker (Synodontis eupterus) comes from the Nile and Niger river systems in Africa and reaches about 15 to 20 cm. Juveniles carry a spectacular tall, ragged dorsal fin that becomes proportionally smaller with age, so the adult is a more sober fish than the one on the shop shelf. Like other Synodontis it can stridulate, rubbing its pectoral spine in its socket to produce a clearly audible squeak when handled or alarmed. It needs 200 litres or more at 22-28C, pH 6.5 to 8.0, tolerating a very wide range of water, with caves, wood and dim lighting. Feed sinking pellets, frozen bloodworm, mysis and some vegetable matter in the evening. It is nocturnal, peaceful with fish it cannot swallow and adaptable enough to suit either an African cichlid tank or a general community of medium fish. It is territorial with its own kind, so keep one unless the tank is large. Its long life, easily ten to fifteen years, is worth planning for. Move it in a container, never a net.
