๐ Care guide
The Gold Nugget Pleco (Baryancistrus xanthellus, traded as L018, L081 and L177 depending on spot size) comes from the Rio Xingu in Brazil and reaches about 20 to 25 cm. The variants differ in the size and density of the gold spots rather than in care. It is a river-rapids fish, which sets its requirements far more than its appearance does. It needs 250 litres or more at 26-30C with strong current and very high dissolved oxygen, pH 6.5 to 7.5, plenty of smooth rock and wood, and mature, stable water. It should not be added to a newly cycled tank. Its diet is omnivorous rather than purely herbivorous: algae wafers and blanched vegetables plus frozen bloodworm, mysis and protein-rich sinking pellets. Given warmth, flow and food it is hardy and long-lived, and the common failure pattern is the opposite set of conditions, a still warm tank with no supplementary feeding, where it slowly starves while looking fine. Keep one per tank, as adults are territorial with other large plecos.
