๐ Care guide
The Dwarf Synodontis (Synodontis petricola) is endemic to Lake Tanganyika and stays small at about 10 to 11 cm. It is very similar to Synodontis lucipinnis and the two are regularly mixed in the trade; both behave the same in a tank. It should not be confused with the cuckoo catfish, Synodontis multipunctatus, which is the species famous for slipping its eggs into a mouthbrooding cichlid's spawn. Keep a group of three to five in 150 litres or more at 24-27C, pH 7.8 to 9.0 in hard buffered water, with rockwork full of caves. Feed sinking pellets, frozen mysis, bloodworm and brine shrimp, offered in the evening when it becomes active. Its combination of small adult size, hardiness and calm temperament makes it the standard catfish for Tanganyikan and Malawi tanks, where larger Synodontis species would harass or eat tankmates. Handle it with a container rather than a net, since the locking pectoral and dorsal spines tangle badly in mesh.
