Pearl white scattered with orange diamonds and blue lines, endlessly filling its mouth with sand and sieving it out through the gills. Beautiful, useful, and quietly harder to feed than it looks.

๐ Care guide
The Diamond Watchman Goby (Valenciennea puellaris) is an Indo-Pacific sleeper goby reaching about 13 to 15 cm. Despite the trade name it does not partner with pistol shrimp; it is a sand sifter that scoops mouthfuls of substrate, filters out edible organisms and expels the clean sand, keeping the surface of a sand bed turned and bright. It needs 200 litres or more with a deep bed of fine sand, at 24-27C, salinity 1.024-1.026, pH 8.1-8.4, and a covered top. The honest difficulty is nutrition: many specimens slowly starve in tanks whose sand does not hold enough micro-fauna, so a mature system matters, and it must also be trained onto mysis, enriched brine and sinking pellets fed two or three times daily. Watch its belly profile as the real health indicator. It is peaceful and reef safe, but it will bury the bases of low corals under sand and should not share a tank with another sand-sifting goby.
