๐ Care guide
The Firefish, or Fire Goby (Nemateleotris magnifica), is a dartfish from the Indo-Pacific reaching about 8 cm. Its gradient body, from creamy white to fiery red-orange, and its flicking first dorsal spine make it instantly recognizable. It hovers in the water column but darts into a rock hole at any sign of danger. House in a 75-litre or larger reef tank with rockwork retreats and, crucially, a tightly sealed lid, since these fish are notorious jumpers. Maintain 24-26C, salinity 1.024-1.026, pH 8.1-8.4. Feed frequent small meals of mysis, enriched brine, and fine pellets. It is peaceful and reef-safe but shy, so avoid aggressive tankmates. A single fish or a bonded pair does best; multiples may quarrel unless introduced together.
