Dumeril's boa is endemic to the dry forests and scrublands of southern and western Madagascar, where its ground-hugging camouflage lets it ambush prey among leaf litter. Adults typically reach 1.8 to 2.4 meters and 3 to 9 kilograms, with females larger, and they live 20 to 30 years. Renowned for their placid, unflappable nature, they are among the most handleable of the larger boas. Provide a secure, spacious enclosure of at least 150-190 liters with a hide and a sturdy water dish. Maintain a warm side around 30-32C, a cool end in the mid 20s, and moderate humidity of 50-65%. Feed appropriately sized frozen-thawed rodents or rabbits every one to three weeks, watching for obesity in this slow-moving species. Calm and tolerant, Dumeril's boas rarely show aggression and settle comfortably during gentle, supported handling.
