๐Ÿ“– Care guide

Salamandra salamandra ranges through the damp, shaded forests of Europe. Reaching 15-25 cm, it is exceptionally long-lived, often 15-25 years and sometimes far more in captivity. Its bold black-and-yellow coloration is aposematic, advertising the alkaloid toxins it can secrete from skin glands. Handsome and hardy within its needs, it demands genuinely cool conditions to thrive. House it in a woodland-style terrarium with deep, moist substrate, cork-bark and stone hides, live moss, and a shallow water dish, kept cool at 15-20C; sustained warmth above the low twenties is stressful and can be lethal, so many keepers use a cool room or wine-cooler setup. Feed worms, crickets, and other insects with supplements, avoiding overfeeding. Keep humidity high and the enclosure spotless, as these salamanders are sensitive to poor conditions and skin infection. Because of their toxic secretions and delicate skin, handle rarely with clean wet hands and wash thoroughly, keeping them away from other pets.
