The French Bulldog is a charming, affectionate clown that has become hugely popular for apartment life: it is small, playful, adaptable and needs only modest exercise. But behind the appeal is a breed with serious, built-in health challenges that every owner must plan and budget for, because its flat 'brachycephalic' face is not just a look — it restricts breathing. That short muzzle means a Frenchie can overheat and struggle to breathe dangerously fast, so it must be kept cool, never over-exercised in warmth, and never left in heat or a hot car. Most cannot swim and can drown in a pool. Their skin folds need regular cleaning to prevent infection. Beyond breathing (BOAS, which sometimes needs surgery), the breed is prone to spinal problems from its screw tail and body shape (IVDD), allergies and skin disease, and eye problems. Buy only from a breeder who prioritises health and more open airways over extreme features, keep the dog lean and cool, stay alert to breathing, skin and back issues, and a French Bulldog will be a devoted, comical companion for ten to twelve years.
