Native to the tropical forests of Central and South America, the green iguana can reach 1.5-2 m in total length and 4-8 kg, living 15-20 years or more. Hatchlings are tiny and inexpensive, but the adult size, strength, and specialized care mean it is a serious long-term commitment often underestimated by new keepers. Mature males can become territorial, especially in breeding season. Adults need a custom room-sized enclosure at least 2.5 m long with tall, sturdy climbing branches and a basking platform. Provide a hot basking spot of 35-38 C and, critically, strong UVB across the enclosure, as iguanas are prone to metabolic bone disease without it. Keep humidity at 60-80%. Feed a strictly herbivorous diet of dark leafy greens like collard and mustard, plus squash and other vegetables; avoid animal protein. Regular gentle handling from a young age helps keep them tractable.
