The Kuvasz is Hungary's majestic snow-white livestock and royal guardian, once so prized that only nobility could own one. Like other flock-guardian breeds it is deeply devoted and gentle with its own family but independent, territorial and naturally suspicious of strangers, and it protects with selfless courage and a strong mind of its own. This is emphatically a dog for experienced owners: it makes its own decisions, is not an obedience competitor, and needs early, extensive socialisation, secure high fencing and patient, respectful, positive training to become a stable, discerning guardian rather than an over-protective one. It has moderate energy but a working guardian's instincts, including barking and patrolling. The thick white double coat sheds heavily and needs regular brushing, more during seasonal moults, and the breed prefers cool climates. As a giant breed the Kuvasz has a moderate lifespan of ten to twelve years and real risks: buy from a breeder who screens hips and elbows, guard against bloat with measured meals and rest after eating, and be aware of hypothyroidism. Give a Kuvasz experienced handling, thorough socialisation, secure space and patient training, and this noble white guardian will be a devoted protector for ten to twelve years.
