The Neapolitan Mastiff is a serious guardian breed: calm, undemonstrative and profoundly loyal to its own people, while naturally suspicious of outsiders. This is not a dog for first-time owners — its size, protective instincts and stubborn streak demand early socialization and calm, consistent leadership. Raised well, the Mastino is a peaceful, affectionate housemate that adores lounging beside its family. Exercise should be moderate and low-impact, especially during the long puppyhood while heavy bones and joints mature. Short daily walks and a cool place to rest suit them best; they overheat easily and are not built for jogging or hot climates. Keep training sessions short, positive and firm, because a bored or unconvinced Mastino simply plants itself and waits you out. The famous folds and loose skin need regular cleaning to prevent moisture and infection, and the breed drools prodigiously — keep towels handy. Health concerns include hip and elbow dysplasia, cherry eye, bloat and eye problems tied to the heavy skin. Feed measured meals, guard against bloat, and expect a sadly brief lifespan for such a devoted giant.
