๐ Care guide
The Mongolian gerbil hails from the deserts and steppes of Mongolia and northern China, where it lives in cooperative burrow colonies. Adults measure 10-12 cm plus a furred tail, weigh 50-130 grams, and live two to four years. Clean, nearly odorless, and diurnal enough to be active during the day, they are among the most family-friendly pocket pets. Gerbils are intensely social and must never be kept alone; keep them in same-sex pairs or small clans, ideally littermates, and introduce strangers only via the careful "split-cage" method. Provide a deep glass tank with 20+ cm of burrowing substrate so they can tunnel naturally, plus a solid wheel, chews, and a sand bath. Feed a gerbil seed mix with limited sunflower seeds to prevent obesity, adding small amounts of vegetables and occasional protein. Give plenty of wood and cardboard to gnaw, as their ever-growing teeth need constant wear.
