The pancake tortoise is native to the rocky outcrops and kopjes of Kenya and Tanzania in East Africa, where it shelters in crevices rather than digging burrows. Small at just 15-18 cm and unusually lightweight, it lives around 25-35 years; it is listed as critically endangered, so only legally captive-bred individuals should ever be kept. Its flat shell and love of climbing make enrichment essential: provide a large enclosure with stacked rocks, slate, and crevices to wedge into, plus secure barriers since these agile tortoises climb remarkably well. Maintain warm, dry conditions with a basking spot of 32-35°C, a cooler retreat, and quality UVB lighting. A shallow water dish supports hydration. As grazers, they eat a high-fiber, low-protein diet of grasses, hay, weeds, and leafy greens, with only occasional fruit, supported by calcium and UVB for their thin, delicate shells.
