๐Ÿ“– Care guide

Leopard tortoises are large grassland grazers that do best with a big, dry, warm enclosure โ€” ideally outdoor grazing in warm climates, or a spacious indoor tortoise table with a basking spot of 32โ€“35ยฐC and UVB where the weather is cool. Unlike many tortoises they do not hibernate, so they must be kept warm year-round, never dropping into cold, damp conditions. Feed a high-fibre grazing diet of grasses, hay and edible weeds with a variety of leafy greens; keep fruit and any protein essentially absent, since rich or wet diets cause shell pyramiding and kidney disease. Calcium supplementation and constant hay access support healthy shell growth. Leopard tortoises are gentle and undemanding to interact with, plodding over to graze and tolerating brief, low handling, though their size and weight make lifting a two-hand job as adults. The main risks are respiratory infection from cold or damp housing, metabolic bone disease from insufficient UVB or calcium, pyramiding from excess protein and humidity, and obesity from overfeeding. Well cared for, they are a 50-year-plus commitment.
