The Indian star tortoise is native to the dry scrub forests and grasslands of India, Pakistan, and Sri Lanka, where it experiences distinct dry and monsoon seasons. A small species at 15-30 cm with females larger than males, it lives roughly 35-80 years; heavily trafficked in the wild, it should only be acquired as captive-bred stock through legal channels. Star tortoises are more sensitive than hardy species like Russians, needing consistent warmth and a humidity cycle that mirrors their seasonal home to stay healthy. Provide a spacious enclosure with a basking spot of 32-35°C, strong UVB, humid hides, and a shallow water dish for soaking. Chilling or damp-cold conditions readily trigger respiratory infections. Feed a high-fiber, low-protein grazing diet of grasses, hay, weeds, and leafy greens, with minimal fruit, ensuring ample calcium and UVB for their naturally sculpted shells.
