The Pygmy goat descends from the dwarf goats of the Cameroon Valley in West Africa and was bred for meat and hardiness rather than milk. Compact and muscular, they stand 40-58 cm tall, weigh 23-39 kg, and typically live 10-15 years, thriving in a wide range of climates. Keep pygmies in pairs or small herds, as isolation causes stress and destructive behavior. They need a weatherproof shed, sturdy climbing structures for play, and fencing tall enough to foil jumpers. Their diet should center on grass hay and browse; grain must be strictly limited because pygmies gain weight easily and are prone to obesity and urinary calculi. Provide loose minerals, clean water, and routine hoof trims, deworming, and dental checks to keep these lively little goats healthy.
