📖 Care guide

The Roborovski hamster is the smallest hamster species at 4.5–5 cm and about 20–25 grams, native to the sand dunes of Mongolia, northern China and Kazakhstan, where it was first described in 1894 by Lt. Vsevolod Roborovsky. Unusually for hamsters it lives 3–3.5 years, the longest of the dwarf species. House Robos in the biggest enclosure you can — a 100×50 cm base is a fair minimum — with 20+ cm of burrowing substrate and a 20 cm+ wheel; they routinely log the equivalent of 10 km a night. Provide a sand bath (chinchilla sand, not dust) which they use both for coat care and, endearingly, as a bathroom. Same-sex pairs raised together can work but must be split at the first sign of squabbling. They eat a quality dwarf-hamster seed-and-pellet mix with occasional protein (mealworm, egg) and minimal fruit — desert animals, they are diabetes-prone like all dwarfs. Robos are the least tameable and most entertaining hamster: handle over a container (they teleport), and let the joy be in the watching.
