๐Ÿ“– Care guide

The Winter White Dwarf Hamster (Phodopus sungorus), also called the Djungarian or Siberian hamster, comes from the meadows and steppes of Kazakhstan and southwestern Siberia. Its party trick is seasonal: as winter daylight shortens, wild animals moult from grey-brown to near-white camouflage. It weighs 30-50 g and lives about 1.5-2 years. Winter Whites are generally gentler and calmer than Campbell's, which makes them one of the more handleable dwarf species with patient, low taming. They are crepuscular and nocturnal, and while sibling pairs can sometimes live together, they must be split at the first real sign of aggression. Provide a large enclosure with 20+ cm of burrowing substrate, a 20 cm solid wheel and a sand bath. Like all Phodopus dwarfs they are prone to diabetes, so feed a low-sugar dwarf mix, skip fruit, and offer protein treats sparingly. They cross readily with Campbell's in the pet trade, producing hybrids prone to health problems, so a genuine, well-bred Winter White is worth seeking out; watch for wet tail, obesity, dental overgrowth and age-related tumours.
