📖 Care guide

The Chinese hamster, native to the deserts of northern China and Mongolia, is not a true dwarf but its own genus branch: a slender 10–12 cm body of 30–45 grams with a genuine 2–3 cm tail it uses for balance, gripping fingers and cage bars like a tiny primate. Lifespan is 2–3 years. Agile climbers, they appreciate enclosures with both deep substrate for burrowing and low, safe climbing structure; a 100×50 cm base with a 20 cm wheel suits them well. Females are notably territorial — house Chinese hamsters solo, which is how they live in the wild outside breeding season. Diet-wise they are the most diabetes-prone hamster of all: a low-sugar dwarf mix, zero fruit as routine, and protein treats instead. Once hand-tamed (they tame more deeply than dwarfs, given quiet patience), a Chinese hamster will sit wrapped around a finger — the calm scholar of the hamster world.
