📖 Care guide

Campbell's Dwarf Hamster (Phodopus campbelli) is a true dwarf from the steppes and semi-deserts of Mongolia, northern China and Central Asia, a rounded 20-50 g ball of fur with a faint dorsal stripe. It lives only 1.5-2.5 years, so it is a short but engaging companion. Quick, curious and more likely to nip than a Syrian, Campbell's are watch-and-interact pets more than cuddle pets, and they are most active at dawn, dusk and through the night. Same-sex sibling pairs raised together can sometimes cohabit, but any fighting means they must be separated permanently, as dwarf hamsters can injure or kill each other. House them in a large enclosure — a 100x50 cm floor minimum — with deep burrowing substrate, a solid-surface wheel of 20 cm or more, and a sand bath. Critically, Campbell's are strongly prone to diabetes, so feed a low-sugar dwarf-hamster mix with no fruit and only occasional protein treats. Watch for wet tail (a serious diarrhoeal illness), overgrown teeth and, in older animals, tumours, and see an exotics vet promptly if a hamster stops eating or goes quiet.
