๐Ÿ“– Care guide

The sulcata is native to the southern edge of the Sahara across the Sahel of Africa, adapted to hot, arid grasslands where it digs extensive burrows to escape heat. It is the third-largest tortoise in the world, reaching 60-90 cm and 45-100 kg, and lives 70-100 years, so its enormous adult size and lifespan make it a major, often underestimated commitment. Sulcatas quickly outgrow any indoor housing and require a large, secure outdoor space in a warm climate, with heated shelter for cold nights and reinforced barriers against their prodigious digging and pushing. They need a basking area, UVB if kept indoors while young, and warm, dry conditions to prevent respiratory and shell problems. As pure grazers, they must eat a bulky high-fiber, low-protein diet of grasses and hay, with weeds and leafy greens; too much protein or fruit causes dangerous shell pyramiding.
