The arctic fox (Vulpes lagopus) roams the tundra of the far north, changing from a brown-gray summer coat to dense snow-white in winter. Weighing 3-6 kilograms and living ten to fourteen years in captivity, they are playful, agile, and lively, though they retain strong wild instincts and shed profusely twice a year. Their thick coat leaves them prone to overheating in warm climates. House them in a large, secure outdoor run with dig-proof and climb-proof fencing, shade, cooling options, and heavy enrichment, since they are athletic escape artists. Feed a carnivore diet of exotic-canid food or raw meat and whole prey with taurine, plus dental chews. Regular brushing during heavy molts is essential to manage the coat and skin. Like other true foxes, arctic foxes are legally restricted or banned in many US states and require permits abroad, so confirm regulations and choose captive-bred stock.
