The kinkajou (Potos flavus) is a nocturnal, tree-dwelling relative of the raccoon from the rainforests of Central and South America. Weighing 1.4-4.6 kilograms, they are remarkably long-lived at twenty to twenty-five years, so ownership is a multi-decade commitment. They are playful and can bond strongly, but are strictly nocturnal, easily startled, and capable of sudden painful bites if overstimulated. House them in a tall, warm enclosure with plenty of climbing branches, ropes, hammocks, and nest boxes that let them move through a vertical space. Their frugivore-leaning diet needs varied fruit, some vegetables, insects or cooked egg for protein, and nectar substitutes, with calcium support to avoid deficiency. Keep them warm and provide night-time interaction on their schedule. Kinkajous can carry roundworm and Salmonella, and are banned or permit-restricted in numerous jurisdictions, making them a legally sensitive, specialist exotic.
