The red fox (Vulpes vulpes) is the most widespread wild canid, found across the northern hemisphere, and appears in many color morphs bred in captivity. Weighing roughly 4-8 kilograms and living ten to fourteen years, they are highly intelligent, energetic, and problem-solving, but also pungent, destructive, and challenging to fully tame. They are best regarded as a demanding, semi-wild companion. Red foxes need a large, secure outdoor enclosure with dig-proof and climb-proof fencing, shelter, digging areas, and abundant enrichment to prevent boredom-driven mischief. Feed a carnivore diet of raw or commercial exotic-canid food, whole prey, and taurine supplementation, with dental items to manage tartar. They scent-mark heavily with a strong musk that cannot be neutralized. Ownership is heavily regulated, illegal in many US states and requiring dangerous-wild-animal or exotic licences elsewhere, so secure proper permits and captive-bred animals before considering one.
