The striped skunk (Mephitis mephitis) is a North American mammal weighing 1.5-4 kilograms and living six to ten years in captivity. Pet skunks are typically descented as kits, and captive-bred lines can be gentle, curious, and affectionately clingy, though also willful and food-obsessed. They are inquisitive diggers who nose into every cupboard and corner. Give them a skunk-proofed home or roomy enclosure with digging opportunities, hides, and enrichment, plus secured low cabinets. Their diet is the crux of skunk care: a balanced mix of lean protein, plenty of vegetables, some fruit and grains, and calcium, since obesity and nutritional bone disease are extremely common on poor diets. They do not tolerate cold well and need a warm retreat. Domestic skunks are legal in only about seventeen US states and are restricted elsewhere as a rabies-vector species, so confirm legality and locate a skunk-savvy vet first.
