Coatis (Nasua species) are raccoon-family mammals from the forests of Central and South America, weighing 3-8 kilograms and living twelve to fifteen years. Their flexible snout and long claws make them tireless foragers who climb, dig, and explore constantly. Sociable and playful when young, males in particular can become aggressive with maturity, so they demand experienced, committed keepers. Provide a very large, tall enclosure with sturdy climbing branches, ropes, nest boxes, and abundant foraging enrichment to channel their energy. Feed an omnivorous diet of insects, lean meat, eggs, and plentiful fruit and vegetables, offered through puzzle feeders. Neutering and early socialization improve temperament, but they remain high-maintenance and destructive indoors. Coatis can carry zoonotic parasites and are subject to import and exotic-pet restrictions in many US states and countries, so confirm the legal status and line up an exotics vet before acquiring one.
