The Asian palm civet (Paradoxurus hermaphroditus) ranges across South and Southeast Asia, weighing 2-5 kilograms and living fifteen to twenty years. Nocturnal and solitary, they are curious but reserved, retaining strong wild instincts and a distinctive musky scent. They are best suited to experienced exotic keepers rather than owners seeking a cuddly companion. House them in a large, tall enclosure with sturdy climbing branches, elevated nest boxes, and hides that reflect their arboreal nature. Their omnivorous diet leans heavily on fruit, supplemented with insects, cooked meat or egg, and a formulated exotic diet; over-reliance on sugary fruit or excess food causes obesity. Provide night-time enrichment and warmth. Civets are associated with disease transmission concerns and controversial civet-coffee farming, and are legally restricted or banned in many countries, so ethical, captive-bred sourcing and proper permits are essential before keeping one.
