The common genet (Genetta genetta) is a small carnivore of the civet family, native to Africa and parts of southern Europe. Weighing 1-2.5 kilograms and living twelve to eighteen years or more in captivity, they are agile, largely nocturnal, and fiercely independent. Genets rarely become lap animals; they tolerate rather than crave handling and can be skittish, so they suit patient, hands-off keepers. Provide a tall, secure enclosure with abundant vertical climbing space, high shelves, hides, and litter areas, as they scent-mark territory. Feed a carnivore diet of whole prey, high-quality raw or commercial exotic-carnivore food, insects, and taurine supplementation, with occasional fruit. They are escape artists who exploit the smallest gap. Genets carry a strong musk and can host zoonotic parasites, and as exotic carnivores they require permits or are restricted in many regions, so verify the legal requirements before acquiring one.
