The Birman is a gentle, even-tempered colourpoint cat with distinctive white 'gloves' on each paw and deep blue eyes, and its personality is as balanced as its looks. It is affectionate and people-loving without being demanding, quiet-voiced, and famously easy-going with children, dogs and other cats — a genuine middle-of-the-road companion that neither clings nor keeps its distance. Despite the semi-long, silky coat, grooming is refreshingly manageable: the Birman has little undercoat, so it resists matting and a brush two or three times a week keeps it in good order. Calm rather than hyperactive, it still enjoys gentle play and a cat tree, and its trusting nature means it should live safely indoors. Generally a robust breed, the Birman is nonetheless screened by good breeders for hypertrophic cardiomyopathy and kidney disease, and it can carry a couple of rare congenital conditions. Buy from a breeder who tests, keep the cat at a healthy weight, maintain a solid dental routine and provide plenty of water to support long-term kidney and urinary health.
