The British Longhair is the semi-longhaired version of the British Shorthair, created when Persian blood was used to rebuild the British lines after the World Wars. TICA and FIFe register it as a breed in its own right, and it inherited the British temperament exactly: calm, undemanding, quietly affectionate and famously tolerant. It is a cat that will sit companionably beside you rather than on you, and it dislikes being carried. That easy nature comes with a real trap. British cats are naturally sedentary and gain weight faster than almost any other breed, so measured meals, a scale check every few months and daily interactive play are not optional. The dense standing coat needs brushing two or three times a week, and every day during the spring and autumn moults, or it packs into felted mats behind the ears and in the armpits. On health, buy only from a breeder who echocardiogram-screens for hypertrophic cardiomyopathy and DNA-tests for polycystic kidney disease, both of which run in British and Persian lines. Keep the cat lean, keep a dental routine, and expect a placid, low-drama companion for twelve to seventeen years.
