Bushbabies, or galagos (Galago species), are tiny nocturnal primates from the forests and savannas of sub-Saharan Africa, weighing just 100-300 grams and living twelve to sixteen years. Named for their wailing child-like calls, they are astonishing jumpers with huge night-adapted eyes. Highly social and easily stressed, they need companionship and are strictly nocturnal, so daytime handling disrupts their welfare. House them in a very tall, warm enclosure with abundant vertical branches, ropes, nest boxes, and UVB lighting to support their leaping, arboreal lifestyle. Their diet requires insects, gum arabic, some fruit, and a primate-formulated food with calcium and vitamin D3 to prevent metabolic bone disease; they urine-wash to scent-mark and cannot be housebroken. As primates, bushbabies are banned or permit-restricted in most US states and many countries, can transmit zoonotic disease, and demand specialist care, making them a legally sensitive commitment for experienced exotic keepers only.
