The tammar wallaby (Notamacropus eugenii) is a small macropod from coastal South and Western Australia, weighing 4-9 kilograms and living eleven to fourteen years. Among the tiniest wallabies, they are quiet, alert grazers that stay somewhat shy even when captive-raised, startling easily and needing calm, low-stress environments. Their small size makes them a little more manageable than larger wallaby species. Provide a secure, grassy enclosure with soft, tall fencing to prevent collision injuries, plus shelter, shade, and dry footing. Feed grasses and hay as the staple, supplemented with macropod pellets, some vegetables, and vitamin E and selenium to guard against capture myopathy and nutritional muscle disease; monitor for lumpy jaw. Handle sparingly and gently. As with other wallabies, ownership is legally sensitive, permitted in some US states but requiring licences or banned elsewhere, so confirm regulations and line up a macropod-experienced exotics vet before acquiring one.
