The common ringtail possum (Pseudocheirus peregrinus) is a nocturnal arboreal marsupial from eastern and coastal Australia, weighing 700-1100 grams and living around five to eight years in careful captivity. Gentle and quiet, they are specialized leaf-eaters that build woven nests called dreys, and they are delicate animals suited to experienced, largely hands-off keepers rather than casual pets. House them in a tall, planted arboreal enclosure with dense branches, nest boxes, and eucalyptus foliage, kept warm and draft-free to avoid respiratory illness. Their folivorous diet is demanding: fresh eucalyptus and native browse, supplemented appropriately, since they practice caecotrophy and cannot thrive on generic fruit-heavy diets that cause nutritional disease. Provide stable warmth and quiet. Ringtail possums are native Australian wildlife, so keeping them almost always requires a wildlife licence and is generally restricted to rehabilitators and permitted keepers within Australia, with export and private ownership tightly controlled.
