Squirrel monkeys (Saimiri species) are small, hyperactive New World primates from the tropical forests of Central and South America, weighing 600-1100 grams and living fifteen to twenty years. They live in large, active troops and are among the most social of monkeys, so solitary housing is deeply harmful; they need same-species companionship and near-constant stimulation. They are fast, delicate, and impossible to fully domesticate. House them in a very large, tall, warm enclosure with dense branches, ropes, UVB lighting, and continuous foraging enrichment. Their diet requires formulated primate food, insects, fruit, vegetables, and careful vitamin D3 and calcium supplementation to prevent bone disease. They scent-mark by urine-washing and cannot be housebroken. Primate keeping is banned or licence-restricted in most US states and many nations, and squirrel monkeys can exchange diseases with humans, so they demand expert care, permits, and a serious ethical reckoning.
