Capuchin monkeys (Cebus and Sapajus species) are highly intelligent New World primates from Central and South America, weighing 2-4 kilograms and living an extraordinary thirty to forty-five years. Their tool-using cleverness and strong social bonds make them fascinating but profoundly demanding, with the emotional and cognitive needs of a perpetual toddler for four decades. Mature capuchins commonly become aggressive and unpredictable. They require an expansive, escape-proof enclosure with climbing structures, UVB lighting, foraging puzzles, and ideally same-species company. Their omnivorous diet needs formulated primate biscuits, fruit, vegetables, insects, and protein, with vitamin D3 and calcium to prevent metabolic bone disease. They cannot be housebroken and demand constant enrichment to avoid neurosis. Capuchin ownership is banned or heavily permit-restricted across most US states and internationally, carries real disease-transmission risk, and raises serious welfare concerns, so it is strictly the domain of licensed, experienced primate keepers.
