The Sokoke descends from cats of the Arabuko-Sokoke forest on the Kenyan coast, giving it a lithe, athletic build and a striking blotched tabby coat with a wood-grain pattern. It is an intelligent, active breed that bonds strongly with its people and communicates with a range of chirps and calls. Energetic and agile, Sokokes love to climb, leap and explore, and they retain sharp hunting instincts. They do best with tall furniture, interactive play, and ideally a feline companion, as they are social and dislike prolonged solitude. Many enjoy water and are confident, dog-like followers of their favourite human. The thin, close coat sheds little and needs only occasional brushing, and the breed tolerates warm climates well. Sokokes are generally hardy with no widespread genetic disease, so care centres on a good diet, weight control, clean water for urinary health and regular dental attention.
