The chinchilla comes from the high, cold Andes mountains of South America, where its ultra-dense fur, with up to eighty hairs per follicle, insulates against alpine temperatures. Weighing 0.4-0.8 kg, chinchillas are exceptionally long-lived for a rodent, often reaching ten to twenty years, so they are a genuine long-term commitment. They are crepuscular, acrobatic, and generally gentle when accustomed to handling. Chinchillas need a tall, multi-level wire cage with solid platforms, ledges, and safe wooden chews, kept in a cool room below about 25 degrees Celsius since they overheat easily and cannot sweat. Their signature care requirement is a dust bath several times a week to keep the dense coat clean and prevent matting; water bathing is harmful. Feed a hay-based diet of unlimited grass hay plus a measured chinchilla pellet, avoiding sugary or fatty treats that cause digestive upset. Provide constant gnawing material to manage continuously growing teeth.
