The sugar glider is not a rodent at all but a small gliding marsupial from Australia and New Guinea, and it is an exotic that asks a great deal of its keeper. In the wild gliders live in colonies and travel treetops, gliding up to 50 m on the membrane between wrist and ankle; a solitary, cage-bound glider is a recipe for stress, self-harm and depression. Keep at least a bonded pair, expect a 10–15 year commitment, and know they are strictly nocturnal. Housing is a tall aviary-style cage — height for climbing and gliding far more than floor space — with branches, ropes, pouches to sleep in and lots of vertical enrichment. They bond by scent and warmth, famously sleeping in a bonding pouch against their owner, but that bond takes patient, nightly effort. Diet is the hardest part and the most common welfare failure: gliders need a carefully balanced mix of protein (insects), a nectar/sap component and limited fruit and vegetables, with strict calcium-to-phosphorus balance — get it wrong and metabolic bone disease (weak, fracturing bones) follows. Because of the specialist diet, colony needs and long lifespan, sugar gliders suit only dedicated, experienced keepers, ideally with an exotics vet on call. Check your local laws too — they are restricted or banned in some places.
