๐Ÿ“– Care guide

Anaxyrus americanus is a common terrestrial toad across eastern North America, at home in woodlands, fields, and gardens. Reaching 5-9 cm, it lives around 5-10 years in captivity and sometimes much longer. Hardy, calm, and undemanding, it is an ideal beginner amphibian, though its dry, bumpy skin belies parotoid glands behind the eyes that secrete a mild defensive toxin. House it in a floor-space terrarium with a few centimetres of moist, safe substrate for shallow burrowing, hides, and a shallow water dish, kept at a moderate 18-25C with modest humidity; toads tolerate drier air than most frogs but must never dry out. Feed appropriately sized crickets, worms, and other insects dusted with calcium and vitamins. Avoid loose substrate that could be swallowed with food, since impaction is a risk. The toxin is harmless if you simply wash your hands after any brief handling and keep it away from eyes, mouth, and other pets.
