The Azure Damselfish (Chrysiptera hemicyanea) comes from the eastern Indian Ocean and Indonesian reefs and stays around 5 to 6 cm. The blue of the upper body meets yellow on the belly, anal fin and tail in a clean diagonal, and the pattern holds its intensity in captivity better than many reef fish do. House it in a 100 litre or larger reef tank at 24-27C, salinity 1.024-1.026, pH 8.1-8.4, with rock caves it can dart into. It accepts flake, pellets, mysis and enriched brine easily and needs no special care, making it a fair choice for a first marine fish. It is one of the more moderate damsels but not a pacifist: keep a single specimen, or an odd-numbered group of five or more in a large tank so aggression spreads out rather than focusing on one victim. Add it after any shy species rather than before.
