๐Ÿ“– Care guide

The Humbug or Whitetail Damselfish (Dascyllus aruanus) is widespread across the Indo-Pacific, including the Red Sea, and stays small at about 6 to 8 cm. Its three black bars on a white body, with a clear white tail, make it one of the most recognisable reef fish. In nature it lives in tight colonies over branching Acropora, diving into the branches together when threatened. It is very hardy at 24-27C, salinity 1.023-1.026, pH 8.1-8.4, and eats flake, pellets, mysis and enriched brine without hesitation. A 120 litre or larger tank with a branching coral or rock thicket lets a group of three to five display its natural huddling behaviour. Honesty about the downside: like most Dascyllus it grows increasingly territorial with age, and a mature individual will defend its coral head against much larger fish. It suits a robust community, not a tank of shy dartfish and small gobies.
