๐ Care guide
The Black Kuhli Loach (Pangio oblonga) comes from slow, shaded blackwater streams and peat swamps across India, Malaysia, Sumatra and Borneo, and reaches about 7 to 8 cm. Unlike the familiar banded kuhli it has no markings at all, wearing a uniform dark brown to near black. Like its relatives it spends much of the day buried in substrate or hidden under wood. Keep a group of at least six, since these fish are far more visible and relaxed in numbers, in a tank of 75 litres or more at 23-28C with a pH of 5.5 to 7.0 and soft water. Fine sand is essential rather than optional, because a gravel bed prevents burrowing and abrades the skin. Add driftwood, leaf litter and dim lighting. Feed sinking pellets, wafers, frozen bloodworm and daphnia after lights out, since it feeds mainly at night. As a scaleless fish it needs half-dose medication, and every tank gap must be sealed because kuhlis find their way into filter intakes.
