๐ Care guide
The Burmese Border or Polka Dot Loach (Botia kubotai) comes from the Ataran river basin on the Thailand and Myanmar border and reaches about 9 to 11 cm. It was only formally described in 2004, and its pattern changes with age: juveniles show clear bands that gradually fragment into an intricate marbled mosaic of pale patches on black. Keep a group of five or more in a tank of 150 litres or more at 24-28C with a pH of 6.0 to 7.5, brisk flow and high oxygen, reflecting its fast-stream origins. Use sand, smooth rounded stones, driftwood and plenty of caves and tunnels; loaches genuinely need multiple hiding spots so they can establish a pecking order without conflict. Feed sinking pellets, wafers, frozen bloodworm and daphnia. It is peaceful with fish but semi-aggressive within its own group when kept in small numbers, it eats pest snails, and as a scaleless fish it needs medications at half dose.
