๐ Care guide
Grammostola pulchra inhabits the grasslands of southern Brazil and Uruguay. A sturdy terrestrial species reaching a 13-16 cm legspan, it is slow-growing but exceptionally long-lived, with females commonly surpassing 20 years and sometimes approaching 30. Its combination of deep-black velvet colouring and famously placid temperament makes it one of the most sought-after display spiders. Keep one adult in a floor-space enclosure with 8-10 cm of lightly moist substrate, a cork hide, and a water dish, at 22-27C and moderate humidity. They are undemanding feeders, accepting crickets and roaches every one to two weeks, and tolerate the odd missed meal well. Though calm and reluctant to flick hairs or bite, they are still New World tarantulas deserving respectful, minimal handling. Their leisurely growth means patience is required, but the resulting hardy, jet-black adult is a lifetime companion.
