Chromatopelma cyaneopubescens comes from the hot, arid Paraguana Peninsula of Venezuela, where it spins dense funnel webs among desert shrubs. It reaches a 12-14 cm legspan and females live around 12-15 years. Colours deepen dramatically with each molt into adulthood, making it a favourite display species despite a skittish, defensive streak. Give a semi-arboreal enclosure combining floor space with elevated anchor points, plenty of cork bark and fake plants, and dry substrate with a water dish. Keep it warm at 24-28C with low humidity and excellent ventilation; over-moist setups kill them. Expect the tank to fill with heavy silk webbing, which is normal and healthy. Feed crickets and roaches weekly. Fast, nervous, and quick to kick urticating hairs, the GBB is better admired than handled; it makes a rewarding intermediate-friendly species.
